PEEPS sessions for Nursery Families

At Furze we recognise that some of the main influences on a child’s early development and outcomes are the quality of the relationships with their parents and carers and what they do with their family at home.
We therefore have started to run PEEPs (Peep Learning Together Programme) sessions for groups of our Nursery families, run directly by our Early Years lead, Mr Atkins.

These sessions support parents and carers to improve their children’s life chances, by; developing sensitive and responsive relationships with their children, making the most of day-to-day learning opportunities – listening, talking, playing, singing, and sharing books and stories together and recognising and building on their own learning potential and achievements.

Mr Atkins ran 12 sessions over the Autumn and Spring term for up to 20 parents, carers and their children, covering sessions from the various strands of the PEEPS programme:

·    Personal, social and emotional development

·    Communication and language

·    Early literacy

·    Early maths

·    Health and physical development.

This year we covered sessions including; making musical instruments, sharing home made books, designing and making puppets for storytelling, discovering maths all around us, learning about patterns in our children’s learning (schemas) and how we can building our children’s confidence during our interactions with them.

Parent and Carer feedback from PEEPs sessions

Feedback from our families who took part this year has been overwhelmingly positive:

“The sessions made me think about using everyday activities to encourage my child to learn and I really enjoyed getting to know the teachers and other parents.”

“My child has started talking more and is confident to use new words, I noticed how each child is different and how they learn at their own pace.”

“It created better interactions, we liked singing, sharing and playing together.”

“She start to be more confident when she is talking and more fluent and clear… I would like to have these sessions more often!”

“I enjoy this session a lot, I got more ideas from the PEEP sessions that make learning more easy.”

“I liked the interaction with all the parents and the kids and the teachers, great doing activities together. We all shared food together at the last one to celebrate like a party.”

Everyone involved in the sessions from the practitioners, to the parents and carers, but most importantly the children had a great time during the sessions that we spend together. We look forward to providing this opportunity for our Nursery families again and again in the years to come!
