Vision
At Furze, our Science curriculum, written using Collins Primary Science, will foster a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and will promote respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the creative curriculum and all the science related topics included, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each topic and across each year group, as well as applying the necessary scientific skills.
Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that skills are taught in depth across the children’s learning at our school.
Develop: To develop a deep and rich knowledge of scientific skills and inquiry that foster a healthy curiosity in the children about our universe.
Experiences: To experience the breadth and depth of the Science national curriculum means our children will acquire and develop the key knowledge and scientific skills through a range of hands on and engaging Science lessons.
Values: To ensure that children learn from a diverse Science curriculum that promotes respect for the world around them, living and non-living.
Explore: To enjoy exploring our world through engaging Science experiences to immerse children within projects and maximise learning for all children
Lifelong: To offer a coherent and progressive learning journey in Science, that builds on prior knowledge, skills and vocabulary to prepare children for future learning through the curriculum in the years ahead.
Opportunities: To create a wide range of opportunities in the curriculum and as extra-curricular time, for children to practise their inquiry and experimentation skills including: questioning, prediction and investigation. To ensure that children confidently handle and use relevant scientific equipment.
Purpose: To realise the importance of Science learning to become responsible, independent citizens who will make the world a better place.
Furze achieved the PSQM in April 2021!
Furze Infant School Awarded Primary Science Quality Mark
In April 2021 334 Primary Science Quality Marks have been awarded to infant, junior, primary, middle and special schools to celebrate their commitment to excellence in science teaching and learning. So far, since its national launch in 2010, over 4000 schools across the UK have achieved a prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark.
The Primary School Quality Mark programme ensures effective leadership of science, enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by professional development led by local experts. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching and learning. Schools that achieve PSQM demonstrate commitment and expertise in science leadership, teaching and learning.
On behalf of the staff, pupils and governors of Furze Infants and Warren Junior School I would like to welcome you to our federation. We are two schools working together under one Governing Body for the benefit of our pupils and the success of the community we live in.
We believe our schools gain from working collaboratively, more importantly, we strive to provide a seamless transition for our pupils between the two schools.
